Dinner at a British Classic in London: The Gilbert Scott

Image
The Gilbert Scott is a true British classic. Set in one of the most architecturally dramatic buildings in London, the dining room has an overwhelming sense of grandeur and occasion, yet manages to be elegantly casual at the same time. Although located in the same building as the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel at St Pancras International station, this is not a pit stop, a conduit or the start of a journey: this is a destination in itself. The Gilbert Scott is the second restaurant from celebrated chef Marcus Wareing, but don’t expect Michelin-style finesse and ceremony – this is a British brasserie, with a menu of historic and nostalgic British dishes. The starters include Brown and Forrest smoked salmon with oatmeal soda bread, crispy pig’s head with laverbread mayonnaise, pickled cockles, and sea herbs and venison terrine with Somerset cider chutney. Highlights from the main courses include an intensely flavoured braised oxtail and nutmeg mash, veal schnitzel with fr...

Chef Simon Rogan’s farm-to-table restaurant L’Enclume is set in a medieval village in the bucolic English countryside. The guide's consultant editor Elizabeth Carter said "His fantastic way with seasonal ingredients from the Cumbrian land and coast brings dishes that are a joyful celebration of this county's magnificent diversity." Chef Simon Rogan said the title was something he had always dreamed of. Since opening in 2002, the restaurant has earned two Michelin stars. Tasting menus change every day and hinge on the...

Babbo Restaurant - Italian flair in Mayfair, London

Image
Cheval Phoenix House is near to Babbo Italian Restaurant in Mayfair In the centre of Mayfair is an Italian restaurant which offers a homely taste of Italy in impressively elegant surroundings. Meaning ‘Daddy’ in Italian, Babbo’s concept is to provide a family friendly, traditional restaurant with a warm welcome and the most authentic home-cooked Italian food.  Focaccia is more of a gastro-event than humble bread; porcini risotto is an achingly savoury concoction of aged rice & painstakingly layered stock; melting suckling pig is braised in olive oil; & Nonna’s lasagne is a crusty-topped, umami-loaded revelation.   The restaurant positively glows with warmth, encouraging the diner to relax and unwind from the first step through the door. Walls are painted yellow - the colour of a Tuscan sunset, chandeliers are hung low and a dark wood bar curves out from a corner of the room. Although it’s owned by a football lawyer (with Premiership clientele to matc...

The best coffee shops in London

Image
Fleet River Bakery Cheval Calico House is nearby Workshop Coffee Co. People often do a lot of research before going to a restaurant. They care about quality, price, localization, reviews, ambience. However, on the moment of a simple coffee and cake, many end up going anywhere and having a cup of coffee not worth of their time. The big chains can be practical for being everywhere. But what about the real good coffee shops, that brew their own coffee and bake their own cake, and are independent to do things in a new way?  London has a lot of them worth trying and on this list you will find some of them: Lantana – Fitzrovia This delightful coffee house is nestled down a lane in Fitzrovia. Lantana’s Australian ownership is reflected in the brunch style dishes, flat whites and relaxed atmosphere. It runs an In and Out operation with the premise being split into two; one for takeaways and the other half for sit down meals. The cakes are particularly good ...
