Focaccia is more of a gastro-event than humble bread; porcini risotto is an achingly savoury concoction of aged rice & painstakingly layered stock; melting suckling pig is braised in olive oil; & Nonna’s lasagne is a crusty-topped, umami-loaded revelation.
The restaurant positively glows with warmth, encouraging the diner to relax and unwind from the first step through the door. Walls are painted yellow - the colour of a Tuscan sunset, chandeliers are hung low and a dark wood bar curves out from a corner of the room. Although it’s owned by a football lawyer (with Premiership clientele to match), Babbo is homely rather than glamorous, with bare brick walls, family photos & a rustic staircase.
Unique in its stubborn insistence on high quality, homely food cooked with love, Babbo’s menu reflects traditional Italian dining while maintaining a high level of quality and presentation. A veritable battalion of animated staff seem mismatched to such a compact space, although their advice is invaluable when navigating the comprehensively costly wine list.
Babbo has a private room for 12 people. Reservations can be made by phone, 020 3641 9303, through reservations@babborestaurant.co.uk, or in their website.
